Hyperactivity frequently manifests in those assigned male at birth, and between ages 5 and 17. Those assigned female often evade detection by school/teachers/parents - as they tend not to exhibit the hyperactivity that tends to call attention to men. Instead, women tend to daydream - a lot. ADHD therapy often helps adults recognize that their adult ADHD diagnosis has been a long time coming.
School and jobs often provide structures that a neurodivergent brain thrives in, but do not often provide ADHD therapy. And when these structures vanish, ADHD brains tend to languish. Without a structure, without a system to jump into, they often have difficulty finding their groove, that is until their adult ADHD diagnosis lands them with the resources, support network, and insight they need to gain control of their lives.
Adult ADHD is famous for this: an unbreakable habit of over-estimating or under-estimating the time it takes to complete tasks, to invest into certain projects or tasks, or to budget for task initiation and follow-through to completion.
Some say that adult ADHD is a battle to manage boredom and under-stimulation. A brain with a low-dopamine baseline will be seeking dopamine surges more frequently - by phone, by video, by substance, by food, and much more. This is natural - we all do it; but the ADHD brain does this more than others - and often to the detriment of their health, relationships, learning, financial stability, or general life satisfaction.
